Los Leones’ coach was overwhelmed with emotions after guiding the Basque outfit to their first Copa final since 1985.
A brilliant Athletic Bilbao stormed to their 36th Copa de Rey final after overturning a 2-1 first leg deficit against Sevilla by crushing the Andaluz side 3-0 on the night.
Immediately after the final whistle, the pitch at the Estadio San Mames was swarmed with legions of Athletic fanatics and their emotional coach, Joaquin Caparros, was caught up in the frenzy.
“This is for the people [of Bilbao] because the city has just been outstanding, and also for the players because they are the ones who have achieved this success,” he screamed to the LaSexta microphones in the middle of the on-field celebrations.
“I believe the reason we won was because my players were much fresher. Sevilla exerted a lot of energy at the weekend against us [in the Primera Division].”
Athletic and Barcelona, the two most successful clubs in the Copa del Rey, will now clash in the final on May 13 in Valencia. With Barca almost certain of Champions League football next season, the Basque outfit will earn a spot in the Europa League (UEFA Cup) regardless of what happens in the final.
