The Andalucian outfit were comprehensively bundled out of the Copa del Rey overnight, and their coach was not impressed with his side’s performance.
Sevilla took a 2-1 lead to San Mames to take on Athletic Bilbao in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semi-finals but they left with their tails between their legs after crashing to a 3-0 defeat on the night to stumble out of the competition 4-2 on aggregate.
Coach Manolo Jimenez made no attempt to conceal either his disappointment or the fact that his side deserved to be eliminated.
“We could not keep up with Athletic’s intensity during the game. They overwhelmed and dominated us and they beat us because we didn’t play well at all and we couldn’t adapt,” he said candidly during the post-match interviews.
“I am disappointed, just as our fans will be, too. I am angry and upset because we knew this was coming and yet we let it happen.
“With all due respect, I do not believe that Athletic were superior to us but they deserved to move on. We did not deserve to be in the final.”
Sevilla now have almost no chance of silverware this term after bundling out of the UEFA Cup in the group stage, although they are still mathematically in the Primera Division title race.
