Gonzalo Higuain and Pepe have aired their thoughts on Real Madrid's current situation, after helping their side at 2-0 triumph over Espanyol at Montjuic.

Higuain did not have his best game and was duly substituted in the second half. The Argentine was quick to acknowledge his indifferent display.

"I was a little tired after a very tough game in midweek," he told the press. "But what is important is that my team-mates played well and got the three points."

He then looked ahead to Madrid's next two games, which include a date with local rivals Atletico Madrid and an all-important Champions League clash.

"We now have to prepare for the derby, and then the visit to Liverpool. We have two very important games coming up," Higuain said.

Finally, the young forward refused to comment when asked for a prediction for the upcoming clash between Atleti and Barcelona, saying, "All we could do was win today. We are not concerned with what the other teams do."

Meanwhile, Pepe could not resist putting the pressure on Barca, whose lead at the top has now been cut to just four points.

"It was important to win so we could trim the gap to Barcelona. Now they must respond," said the Brazilian-born defender.

Pepe then acknowledged that the Espanyol win was not one of Real Madrid's prettier performances, and he credited his opponents for not allowing them to play their natural game.

The manner of victory is not a concern for Pepe, though, as he stated, "With these victories, people have to respect us."
