Real Madrid will be without Pepe and Wesley Sneijder for next week's clash against city rivals Atletico Madrid, as they will both serve a one-match suspension after being booked in the win over Espanyol.
Pepe's fate was sealed as early as the fourth minute, when he was cautioned for a challenge on Nene that sent the Brazilian crashing to the floor.
Wesley Sneijder, meanwhile, was given a yellow card early in the second half for a tackle from behind on Ivan Alonso.
While coach Juande Ramos will be loath to lose these two players for such a vital game, it could have been worse, as no fewer than seven of his players were on the verge of suspension ahead of the Espanyol game.
