Messi: Don't Blame Rijkaard

Barcelona striker Lionel Messi admits that he owes a lot to Frank Rijkaard and he insists that it’s not the coach’s fault for the recent slump in form.

The Blaugrana have been woeful by their rigorous exacting standards this season. Their exit from the Champions League as well as a string of poor results domestically has contributed to Rijkaard’s position coming under close scrutiny and he will be leaving later this month.

Messi was full of praise for his coach and he is adamant that the Dutchman should not be held accountable for the team’s failings.

“I believe that he (Rijkaard) has done some great things for this club,” Messi told Radio Red.

“I don’t think he should be blamed for anything which has gone wrong and I think the fans know this and that’s why they showed him appreciation on Sunday

“I am grateful to him for what he has done and I would like to thank him.

“It has not been a good year for us, we had hoped to win everything instead we ended up with nothing for the second year in a row.”

Messi also spoke regarding rumours that Chelsea are interested in him. However the striker declared that he is happy at Camp Nou.

“I am a Barcelona player and this is what matters most," he added. "I have heard that Chelsea like me and I am very proud that such a great club are interested in me but I am happy here.”
