Greek powerhouse Panathinaikos have given head coach Henk ten Cate the sack with immediate effect for unknown reasons. Chairman Nicolas Pateras confirmed the news on Tuesday.

It's not yet known whether assistant coaches Mike Snoei and Laurens Ebbens will have to make way too, but the duo are expected to be fired in the coming days as well.

Ten Cate recently announced his decision to leave the club at the end of the season in order to return to Holland, but Panathinaikos have now decided to send the Dutchman home right away.

The former Ajax gaffer guided Panathinaikos to second spot in the table last term, but missed out on Champions League participation after being eliminated by Atletico Madrid in the preliminaries.

Panathinaikos sit second in the Greek league at the moment, trailing table toppers Olympiacos by one point. Additionally, they are close to qualification for the knock-out phase of the Europa League.
