Fans, players and all connected with Greek football club Olympiakos are mourning the death of club legend Achilleas Grammatikopoulos, after the former goalkeeper died of natural causes at the age of 100.
Grammatikopoulos passed away on Tuesday and tributes have started to flow in for the former player, who won 13 titles with the Piraeus club during a distinguished career, that spanned 16 years at the club and included five appearances for the Greek national team.
An official statement on the club’s website read: “The Olympiakos family is mourning the loss of a symbol of the club’s history, veteran footballer Achilleas Grammatikopoulos at the age of 100.”
Current captain Predrag Djordjevic also paid tribute to Grammatikopoulos: “I would like to express personally, but also on behalf of my fellow teammates, my deepest condolences to the family of Achilleas Grammatikopoulos, a man who has left this life but whom we all know – but whom I have also personally learned – has given so much to the Olympiakos family.”
Grammatikopoulos’ funeral will be held on Friday.
