Chalkias: UEFA Cup Is PAOK Objective

Title contenders or UEFA Cup hopefuls? It appears the latter is a better description for a resurgent PAOK this season...

Greek Super League: OFI-PAOK / Simic - Chalkias (INTIME)
Greece international and PAOK goalkeeper Konstantinos Chalkias says UEFA Cup football is his club’s aim for this season.

Currently sitting in second place, four points behind league leaders Olympiakos after a fine start to the season, PAOK are shaping up as a genuine contender for the Greek Super League title.

However, their 34 year-old shot-stopper was conservative when outlining the team’s objectives in an interview with Thessaloniki Municipal TV.

“The initial target is to get the team into the UEFA Cup and to be a competitive representative,” Chalkias said. “If we achieve anything greater it won’t be an objective but a success.”

The former Aris ‘keeper , who joined his former club’s city rivals during the summer, also says his side’s re-emergence as a powerhouse will break the monopoly of ‘Big Three’ in Greece (AEK, Olympiakos and Panathinaikos):

He said: “The central teams monopolise the championship but I think we have wedged our way into it.

“That can only be positive because it will attract more interest from those who follow the league

“The aim is to be at the top of the ladder.”

Despite the progress the club have made under the leadership of president Theos Zagorakis and technical director Zisis Vryzas, Chalkias insists a first place finish will be tough.

“It isn’t unlikely that it will happen but it will certainly be difficult,” Chalkias said. “It would be a great success.”
