Asians In Europe: Cup Heartbreak For Park Ji-Sung
It was another busy week for some of Asia's finest in the big leagues out west...
Park Ji-sung (Manchester United and South Korea)
Almost scored in the FA Cup semi-final against Everton before he was replaced by Paul Scholes midway through the second half. Park had to watch as his team crashed out on penalties.
Masoud Shojaei (Osasuna and Iran)
After hitting top form in recent weeks, Shojaei missed Osasuna’s defeat at Almeria through illness.
Shunsuke Nakamura (Celtic and Japan)
A lively game for the playmaker. He was heavily involved as Celtic stayed top with a 2-0 win at home to Aberdeen.
Javad Nekounam (Osasuna and Iran)
Nekounam caught the same illness as Shojaei and missed Osasuna’s defeat at Almeria. Both should be back against Malaga in midweek.
Mehdi Mahdavikia (Eintracht Frankfurt and Iran)
Was on the bench as Frankfurt thrashed Borussia Monchengladbach 4-1.
Sun Xiang (Austria Vienna and China)
Sun is injured and missed his team’s 2-1 win over Kapfenberg.
Takayuki Morimoto (Catania and Japan)
The young striker returned to the starting line-up and played all but four minutes of Catania’s 2-0 win at home to Sampdoria.
Junichi Inamoto (Eintracht Frankfurt and Japan)
The midfielder had a good game as Frankfurt produced one of their best performances of the season to maul Monchengladbach. Any lingering fears of relegation have been banished.
Youssef Mohamad (Koln and Lebanon)
A bad week for Koln and their Lebanese defender as they lost 3-0 at home to an in-form Stuttgart team. The Rhine club have been struggling of late and are sliding down the table.
Shinji Ono (Bochum and Japan)
The Japanese star started Bochum’s 2-0 defeat at home to Borussia Dortmund but was withdrawn after 53 minutes with an injury that could rule him out for the rest of the season.
Daisuke Matsui (St. Etienne and Japan)
Stayed on the bench as St. Etienne did their hopes of survival no harm at all with a 2-1 win at home to Lille.
Hussein Abdulghani (Neuchatel Xamax and Saudi Arabia)
Returned to his team’s defence but struggled as they lost 3-2 at home to FC Basel.
Park Chu-young (Monaco and South Korea)
Park hit the post as Monaco produced a late show to win 3-1 at home to Europe-chasing Stade Rennes. After an indifferent season so far, Monaco are improving.
Maketo Hasebe (Wolfsburg and Japan)
Will probably miss the rest of the season after undergoing knee surgery recently.
Lee Young-pyo (Borussia Dortmund and South Korea)
Is injured and missed Dortmund’s win at Bochum.
Vahid Hashemian (Bochum and Iran)
'The Helicopter' was left on the bench as Bochum lost 2-0 at home to Dortmund.
Cho Won-hee (Wigan Athletic and South Korea)
Cho won’t make his Wigan debut this season. He picked up an injury against North Korea in World Cup qualifying and is out of action for a few months.
