League Cup Player Ratings: Manchester United 2-0 Tottenham Hotspur
Gibson double eliminates shot-shy Spurs
MANCHESTER UNITED
Tomasz Kuszczak - 6 - Little to do but get wet in the rain as Tottenham's possession wasn't reflected in their number of shots on goal.
Gary Neville - 5 - It was the tortoise versus the hare on United's right flank, and unluckily for Neville, this was a sprint, not a marathon. Didn't get near Lennon all night.
Wes Brown - 6 - Solid as usual from the fans' favourite who rarely lets his team-mates down. Left bloodied by Kuszczak after receiving a blow to the face.
Nemaja Vidic - 7 - A couple of trademark blocks and shoulder barges show the value that the no-nonsense Serb brings to the side. Marked down slightly for some suspect passing.
Ritchie De Laet - 6 - Improved as the game wore on. Pulled inside too often, leaving the cross-field pass to Bentley on in the first half. Made up for his naivety with some last ditch diving tackles. Booked for persistent fouling.
Ji-Sung Park - 5 - Still finding his way back to the form he is capable of producing. Several smart touches, but failed to get involved enough.
Darron Gibson - 8 - Goals win matches and make careers. His thunderbolt got United going, and his smooth, curling effort into the top corner sealed the win. Blew away any memories of his Besiktas nightmare. Booked for a cynical foul on Lennon.
Anderson - 7 - A return to form for the inconsistent Brazilian. The flicks and passes came off tonight, as well as the usual physicality of his game.
Gabriel Obertan - 6 - Another decent display, that featured some mature tracking back as well as standard flair on the ball. Substituted for Carrick.
Danny Welbeck - 6 - Isolated at times up top, but got on with it manfully. Held up the ball adequately and joined in the delightful interplay on the edge of Spurs' box. Moved to the left after a raft of substitutions.
Dimitar Berbatov - 7.5 - New hairstyle but same classy approach. Injected quality into the side after his injury absence, and his former team-mates couldn't get the ball off him. Taken off for Macheda
Substitutes
Zoran Tosic - 6 - Rare appearance for the mystery man from Serbia.
Michael Carrick - 6 - Kept United ticking over after his introduction from the bench.
Federico Macheda - 6 - The hustle and bustle expected was on show.
TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR
Huerelho Gomes - 7 - Difficult not to feel sorry for the Spurs custodian as his only interjection was picking the ball out of his net.
Alan Hutton - 6 - Pegged back Park and charged forward to unsettle De Laet. An excellent run into the United box almost led to a goal. Saw yellow after being outfoxed by Welbeck.
Sebastien Bassong - 5 - Should have been braver when bolting out from the back to deny Gibson, and lost out to Berbatov too many times for comfort. Saved by Gomes after his hesitancy let in Welbeck on the hour mark.
Michael Dawson - 6 - The big man at the back outshone his partner with his more dominant performance under the high ball.
Gareth Bale - 6 - Combined with Lennon to torment Neville, but was caught out a few times by Obertan's quick feet.
Aaron Lennon - 7 - Had the beating of Neville all night, but will regret not making the most of his advantage by supplying the crosses to unsettle the opposition defence.
Jermaine Jenas - 6 - Did the simple things well, but showed no gumption to move up a gear. Is the story of his Tottenham career.
Wilson Palacios - 5 - Didn't clamp down on Gibson and was hooked for Huddlestone as Spurs went on the hunt for goals.
David Bentley - 4 - Managed to work his way into crossing positions but too often his target seemed to be in the front rows of the Old Trafford stands. Lacked belief when played in at the start of the second half.
Jermain Defoe - 7 - The Premier League's on-form goal-getter was as sharp as usual at sniffing out opportunities, but the ball just wouldn't go in the net. Denied by a brave De Laet block in the first half.
Robbie Keane - 7 - Linked up play between attack and midfield, and only some typically robust defending from Vidic stopped him getting on the scoresheet. Taken off for Crouch.
Substitutes
Tom Huddlestone - 6 - Tidy, but didn't tip the scales in Spurs' favour as Harry Redknapp would have hoped.
Peter Crouch - 6 - Jeered from the stands but decent on the pitch.
