The Gunners want to retain a number of first-team players but are yet to make a decision on the future of experienced centre-back Per Mertesacker, who has captained the club
Arsenal are set to offer new deals to five first-team players, but have yet to make a decision on the future of central defender Per Mertesacker, according to The Times.
The Gunners want to retain the services of Santi Cazorla, who is entering the last 12 months of his deal, Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil, Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain ahead of the summer, despite both Ozil and Oxlade-Chamberlain being linked with moves away from the Emirates.
No new deal is currently planned for Mertesacker, however, with Arsene Wenger keen to assess both his form and his fitness ahead of the summer.
Wenger is expected to strengthen his squad when the transfer window reopens, and he is set to be handed a transfer budget of £70 million to restructure his playing staff.
