Al Ahly right-back Fathi set for Arsenal trial

Arsene Wenger continues his search for full-back cover despite closing in on the £8 million signing of Mathieu Debuchy, with the Egypt international flying in to be assessed
Egypt international Ahmed Fathi will have a trial at Arsenal after Al Ahly confirmed that the right-back is due in London on Friday.

Fathi spent six months on loan at Hull City in the second half of the 2012-13 Championship season and, despite making just one start and six league appearances, he now has the chance to impress Arsene Wenger.

The Egyptian Premier League club confirmed on their official Facebook page that the 29-year-old will leave for London on Friday and will miss his side's Egypt Cup semi-final on Monday.

"Ahmed Fathi is set to travel to England on Friday to undergo a trial period at Arsenal Football Club in preparation to sign him if he has a successful trial and so Fathi will be unavailable to participate in Al Ahly's game against Smouha in the semi-final of the Egypt Cup next Monday," the statement on Facebook read.

Following Bacary Sagna's departure in the close-season for Manchester City, Wenger is looking for a new right-back, with Newcastle full-back Mathieu Debuchy set to join Arsenal for €10 million.

Fathi, who has played 165 matches since joining Al Ahly in 2007, is out of contract once the club's cup campaign ends and has represented Egypt 101 times, scoring three goals.
