"Remy Cabella was indispensable to Montpellier last season, scoring 14 goals in Ligue 1. Cabella is able to play on either flank but his best position, due to his eye for a pass, is behind the striker.
"Montpellier have opened the door for Cabella to leave this summer, but club president Louis Nicollin will not let the playmaker go for anywhere below his valuation of the player."
Cabella was selected as part of Didier Deschamps' squad for the finals in Brazil, although he is now back in Europe following France's elimination at the quarter-final stage of the competition.
Goal understands that Newcastle have come back in for the 24-year-old despite the continuos protestations of Montpellier president Louis Nicollin, who is adamant that he does not want to sell to the Tyneside club.
But Alan Pardew's side are undeterred and Cabella is known to be keen on the prospect of joining the Anglo-French colony at St James' Park that includes the likes of Yoan Gouffran, Moussa Sissoko and Hatem Ben Arfa, with Newcastle tabling an offer in the region of €12m for the star.
The Magpies hope to have the deal concluded by the weekend as they look to make Cabella their fourth signing of the summer following deals for Siem De Jong, Jack Colback and Ayoze Perez.
Pardew's side are also considering a move for Olympique Lyonnais striker Aleandre Lacazette having missed out on top attacking target Pierre Michel Lasogga and Goal understands they are also looking for a replacement for Arsenal-bound Mathieu Debuchy, with Daryl Janmaat and Micah Richards in their sights.
