Wenger 'confident' of major Arsenal signing before transfer window closes

The Gunners boss suggests he could land a 'surprise' signing ahead of Monday night's deadline, as they hold talks over a €47m move for Real Madrid attacker Mesut Ozil
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is confident of landing a surprise signing before the transfer window closes on Monday night.

The Gunners have not touched their £70 million (€82m) transfer kitty this summer, bringing in just two free transfers in Yaya Sanogo and Mathieu Flamini, and are set to complete a loan move for Palermo goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano on Monday.

Goal revealed on Sunday that the club are in advanced talks over a sensational €47m move for Real Madrid playmaker Mesut Ozil, and Wenger hinted that a big move could indeed be in the offing.

"We have 24 hours, maybe we can surprise you," Wenger told reporters. "I've revealed very little until now but I’m confident, yes. I'm ready to pay what we can afford even if it's a bit over the market - as long as it's not crazy.

"It’s a little bit a domino game and maybe something will happen in the last 24 hours.

"I’m not against spending money but I want to add super quality to our squad. I'm not against spending money.

"Tottenham got a lot for Gareth Bale and they have to invest it. It's different for us, we have to add one or two more super players."

The Arsenal boss reserved particular praise for Flamini after the Gunners' 1-0 win over Tottenham on Sunday, with the French midfielder replacing the injured Jack Wilshere before half-time and putting in an impressive performance.

"I said it was a no-brainer [to sign him], I’m just sorry it didn’t cost £25m!" he joked. "His overall performance on the pitch was exceptional, it was very convincing."
