Juventus make late swoop to sign Berbatov from Manchester United
The Bulgarian left a Fiorentina representative waiting at Florence airport after failing to board his flight following the heightened interest from the Serie A champions
EXCLUSIVEBy Romeo Agresti
Juventus are set to beat Fiorentina to the signing of Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov.
The Bulgarian was due to travel to Florence on Wednesday morning after United had accepted a €5 million (£4m) bid from Fiorentina, however, after hearing that Juventus were able to offer him a better salary package, the 31-year-old failed to board his flight.
Fiorentina, who finished 13th in Serie A last season, have offered Berbatov €1.8m per year, while the Italian champions have tempted the striker with a €2.7m-a-year wage packet.
Despite offering Berbatov a better deal, Goal.com understands Sir Alex Ferguson is reluctant to allow the forward to move to Juventus after the Italian side secured the signing of former United starlet Paul Pogba earlier this month.
