Zinho confirms Flamengo's interest in Riquelme

The Rio de Janeiro-based club's official stated that his side are vying for the Argentine's services but insisted that only exploratory talks have so far taken place
Flamengo director Zinho has admitted that his side are chasing the signature of former Boca Juniors midfielder Juan Roman Riquelme.

The 34-year-old announced on Wednesday his departure from the club in the wake of their defeat to Corinthians in the Copa Libertadores final after spending the last five years of his career at La Bombonera.

Zinho conceded that Riquelme is an option for the club, but insisted that his priority is to sign Werder Bremen midfielder Diego, who spent the season on loan at Atletico Madrid.

"We have made an offer for Diego and we will wait until Monday or Tuesday," Zinho told reporters.

"He has a very high salary, so it will not be easy to sign him, only if we have an investor to back us up until the end.

"Riquelme? I have not made any offer for him. The only concrete offer is for Diego.

"But it is obvious that Riquelme is a player we are interested in. I would open Flamengo's doors to him.

"I have spoken with his agent after seeing the news [that he had quit Boca] and I asked if it was possible to sign him."
