Betis coach Pepe Mel reckons that it will be very hard for his side to sign Real Madrid's Esteban Granero in January.

The Spanish midfielder has been linked with football away from the Santiago Bernabeu after failing to impose himself during the first half of the season.

However, with Sami Khedira still nursing an ankle problem, Granero has found his way back into the squad, with the 24-year-old featuring in each of Madrid's last three matches.

"Granero wanted to come to Betis," Pepe Mel said at a press conference. "I spoke with him and he was delighted with the idea, but Khedira's injury has changed everything.

"He is playing at Madrid right now. There is nothing more than that. I put the president in contact with his agent, but I am not involved in economic matters."

Earlier in the week, a spokesperson for the agency which represents Granero ruled out the possibility of the player leaving Madrid in January.

The former Getafe star, who returned to Madrid after two years at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez, was also being followed by Malaga and Liverpool.
