Villarreal expect to secure the signing of Tottenham attacker Giovani dos Santos by the weekend.

The Mexican has found his chances at Spurs extremely limited this season and has been reduced mostly to appearances in the Europa League.

The 22-year-old joined from Barcelona in 2008 but has never established himself as a first-team regular and was even loaned out to Ipswich at one point.

But it now appears that a return to Spain is imminent with Villarreal, who currently sit 17th in La Liga and were booted out of the Champions League this season even without winning a single point, prepared to offer Dos Santos an exit from White Hart Lane.

"The negotiations are well on the way and it seems like the player wants to come to Villarreal," said the Spanish club’s vice president Jose Manuel Llaneza.

"The deal is not finalised, but we expect a solution by the weekend. Villarreal needs more attacking players."
