Manchester United are believed to be interested in Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric as a solution to their midfield problems.

Red Devils icon Paul Scholes recently came out of retirement to help ease the burden at Old Trafford, as fellow central players Tom Cleverley and Darren Fletcher continue their lengthy lay-offs.

Meanwhile, Modric, who has been linked with a move away from White Hart Lane and was believed to have been close to Chelsea last year, has been reported by The Mail on Sunday to be one of Sir Alex Ferguson's main summer transfer targets as he looks for a long-term replacement for Scholes.

It is said that Spurs would require a £50 million bid from the Salford-based outfit to persuade them to part with their prized asset.

Modric currently has a contract with Tottenham until 2016, and is expected to play in the blockbuster clash against Manchester City at Eastlands on Sunday.
