Arsenal target Benfica's Javi Garcia - report

The ex-Real Madrid midfielder continues being linked with a move away from the Estadio da Luz, with the North London team having allegedly joined the race for the 24-year-old
Arsenal are weighing up a January bid for Benfica holding midfielder Javi Garcia, Cadena Ser reports.

The Gunners are understood to be in the market for a new man for the centre of the midfield as Jack Wilshere is still far from fitness after suffering an ankle injury.

Arsenal are currently locked in talks with Real Madrid over the potential transfer of Esteban Granero, but the former Getafe man may not be the only Spaniard to move to North London in the winter transfer window.

Javi Garcia, 24, has been a mainstay in Benfica's midfield since joining the club from Real Madrid in 2009 in a €7 million switch.

The former Spain Under-21 international, who has a contract with Benfica until 2014 and a €30m release clause, has been linked with Manchester United and AC Milan in recent weeks.
