Liverpool Line Up €20m Mirko Vucinic As Replacement For Fernando Torres
Roma star a target but only if Spaniard leaves Anfield
By Greg Stobart
Liverpool will make a move for Roma ace Mirko Vucinic if Fernando Torres leaves Anfield, Goal.com UK has learned.
Manager Roy Hodgson has identified the Montenegrin striker as a target as fears grow that the club might have to sell Torres in January.
The Reds boss will only launch a €20 million bid for Vucinic if Spain star Torres forces a move away from Liverpool amid strong interest from Chelsea, Manchester City and Barcelona.
Goal.com UK understands that Hodgson considers Vucinic and Torres to be too similar to pair together and would therefore only sign the Roma frontman as a like-for-like replacement for his main striker.
Torres is believed to have grown restless after Liverpool's poor start to the season – they are 18th in the Premier League after nine matches – and could be looking to force a transfer away from Anfield in the January window.
Liverpool would accept no less than €46m for the 26-year-old Spain international, who has become a Kop hero since joining from Atletico Madrid in July 2007.
Roma are reluctant to let Vucinic leave but accept that the former Lecce forward is open to a move to the Premier League after becoming frustrated at the Stadio Olimpico following the arrival of Marco Borriello on loan from AC Milan.
Vucinic believes he is being undervalued in the Italian capital and his poor relationship with manager Claudio Ranieri further deteriorated last weekend when he reacted petulantly to being substituted during the goalless draw with Parma.
His speed, skill and eye for goal would make him an obvious replacement for Torres but Hodgson believes the pair are too similar to play in the same team.
The Liverpool manager will continue to look for strikers more likely to complement Torres in the hope that the Spaniard will still be at Anfield in February.
Torres has scored just twice so far this season and his performances have increased speculation that he has grown disillusioned at Liverpool and wants to leave the club.
