Marco Borriello had options to join Real Madrid and Manchester City but decided to join Roma instead, claims agent Tiberio Cavalleri.

Juventus were in negotiations with the hitman, but they were at odds over the details of a deal. That left other sides with room to manouevre, but it was Roma who made the right moves.

"On Monday Roberto Mancini called me and we spoke. He wanted Marco at City, but I told him Marco was only interested in playing in the Champions League," the agent told Il Corriere dello Sport.

"Then on Tuesday the big hit came from Real Madrid. But Karim Benzema did not leave for Marseille..."

Borriello's choice to join the Lupi was influenced by the club's president Rosella Sensi and midfielder Daniele De Rossi, who applied the convincers.

"He joined them for the conviction and passion that was shown by Sensi as well as De Rossi's text messages."

De Rossi reportedly sent Borriello a text with the words "let's go and win" in Roman dialect.
