Liverpool reportedly tried to sign Tottenham Hotspur's Roman Pavlyuchenko in a failed last-ditch effort to land a striker on deadline day.
The Russian forward arrived at Spurs in 2008, after spending five years at Spartak Moscow. The hitman had trouble settling down under manager Harry Redknapp, but came into his own during the latter stages of last season.
Reds boss Roy Hodgson was thought to be in the market for a striker to bolster a front line that has been found lacking in depth since Robbie Keane returned to north London.
Now talkSPORT reports that the Merseyside club were interested in signing the ex-Rotor hitman, but Spurs boss Harry Redknapp was in no mood to let the player go as his side are preparing for life in the Champions League.
Liverpool are then reported to have turned their attention towards West Ham United striker Carlton Cole, offering Ryan Babel and Lucas Leiva to the east London club in possible exchange deals, according to The Guardian.
However, Babel confirmed on his Twitter page on Tuesday that he was not leaving Anfield, while Lucas is also thought to have been disinclined to leave the club.
