Official: Osasuna Sign Real Betis Defender Nelson On Season-Long Loan
Osasuna have confirmed a loan deal for the Real Betis defender Nelson.
By Paul Macdonald
The 27-year-old spent two years with the Verdiblancos following his transfer from Benfica, but following the clubs’ relegation in 2009 they are looking to reduce their wage bill, and have agreed to allow Nelson, who has been capped on one occasion by Portugal, to move to Pamplona.
Should Osasuna wish to sign the full-back at the end of the loan spell, the transfer fee of €6 million has been agreed between the parties.
Los Rojillos have been hunting for a replacement for Cesar Azpilicueta, who was sold to Marseille, and coach Jose Antonio Camacho has swooped for Nelson, who had fallen out of favour at the Segunda Division club.
Betis have seen a number of first team players move on this summer, with Sergio Garcia heading to Espanyol, Mehmet Aurelio being sold to Besiktas.
With midfielder Achille Emana also remaining likely to move on before the transfer window closes, the Andalucian club are beginning to feel the financial impact of spending an extra season outside la Primera.
