Reigning Scottish champions Rangers are on brink of signing Croatian international Nikica Jelavic from Rapid Wien, according to news in the British press.

The Daily Mail claim that Rangers and SK Rapid had reached a £4 million deal last week with the Scottish giants also agreeing personal terms with the 24-year-old. However, Rapid wanted the Croatian to play for them against Aston Villa in their Europa League play-off tie, a proposal that Jelavic has refused as he would then be cup-tied for Rangers and wouldn't be able to play in the Champions League in 2010-11.

Rapid's president Rudolf Edlinger has told the club's official website: "Contrary to all expectations, Nikica Jelavic said today that he did not want to play for SK Rapid. It is a shock to the entire Rapid family.

"Rapid is a club with heart and emotion. But if someone on his own at such short notice, says he does not want to play for Rapid, then he can go because he lets down not only the team but also the whole club.

"I think that our fans will understand the decision of SK Rapid."

It is now presumed that Jelavic will join Rangers imminently.
