Juan Mata’s father has insisted that Valencia must offer his son an improved contract to remain at the Mestalla – or else make him available for transfer.

Marca reports that Juan Mata Snr. – who also acts as representative to the winger – has stated that he has not been approached by anyone associated with the club in relation to renewal of his current deal with Los Che.

Barcelona have previously been linked with a move for the Spanish international, who represented his nation at the World Cup in South Africa, and Mata insists that if no new deal is forthcoming then the player should be allowed to negotiate with other interested parties.

He commented: “The situation is the same as it was. There is no conflict, but the club have not made an offer of renewal, and this is stretching the issue out too much.

“The club has to try to renew, or try to sell. It is illogical to allow [Mata] to stay until the end of his contract.”

A major bone of contention between club and player is the current length of the 22-year-old’s current deal, with the player believing he has two years left to run, but Valencia maintaining that Mata is under contract for a further three years.

Mata Snr. added: “This was a problem last year, and it has arisen again. Last year there was a proposal that included an extra year, and we understood that this proposal was not good enough and did not accept, so we believe he has two years remaining on his contract.”

However, he was quick to add that his son remains grateful of the support he receives in Valencia, stating: “My son is thrilled with the recognition he gets from fans in the street, here he is an idol.”
