Portuguese champions Benfica have said that they will agree to negotiations over star defender David Luiz only if someone puts forth an offer of €40 million or more.

The 23-year-old centre-back has been in high demand all summer with Premier League champions Chelsea, big-spenders Manchester City and Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid all having reportedly shown interest in the player.

Although Benfica, who sold Argentine international winger Angel di Maria to Madrid earlier this summer, have admitted that they are willing to let go of the Brazilian international, the club's president has stubbornly said that only a massive bid will see them take to the round table.

"We would only begin talks over an offer of about €40m,'' said Luis Filipe Vieira, according to ESPNSoccernet. ''It would be impossible to consider any offer less than that because it would be bad business for us. I want David Luiz to stay at the club for this season."

David Luiz has been with Benfica since 2007 and played an important role in their title triumph last season.
