Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has called on captain Cesc Fabregas to end the speculation surrounding his future once and for all.
The Spanish midfielder, along with Robin van Persie, missed Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with AC Milan in the Emirates Cup on Saturday, having been given extra time off after their efforts in the World Cup final.
It was rumoured that Fabregas had told the Gunners boss of his desire to leave the club and rejoin Barcelona, before he headed for South Africa.
But with Fabregas not due back in England until after the Emirates Cup, Wenger remains confident that his captain will be full focused on playing for Arsenal next season, despite having already turned down a £30 million offer from the Catalan club.
However Wenger wouldn’t confirm or deny he had met with Fabregas on Friday to discuss his future, but did stress that it was not up to the player to put the record straight.
"In the last six months, this story has made our lives difficult," Wenger said according to Sky Sports.
"At the moment, what is important is that when Cesc comes back, that he comes out.
"For me, I have nothing more to add.
"The conversations with the players have to be private because I cannot come out every time I speak with a player."
Barcelona have not helped matters, although in recent weeks the Spanish giants have appeared to admit defeat in their pursuit of the Gunners captain, although defender Carlos Puyol, an international team mate, believes Arsenal are keeping the player against his will.
But Wenger wants to put an end to this saga re-iterating that his captain is not for sale.
"They [Barcelona] certainly have a case to answer [on allegations of tapping up], but it is always the same - how can you prove it?" he said.
"[Carlos] Puyol is responsible for his own statements, which is why I have said before, only [Cesc] Fabregas can clear the air when he comes back from holiday.
"I cannot master what is written in the newspapers, I can only master our decisions.
"Cesc [Fabregas] has five years to go [on his contract] and that's it.
"The speculation does not stop - who can stop the speculation? Only Cesc, that is how I feel.
"We cannot go into a season where every day you read about that.
"He has not played today, we have just played a football game and I sit here speaking about Fabregas.
"Barcelona have given up for a long time. I told you yesterday that what will happen is that Fabregas will stay here."
