Rafael Marquez is close to finally completing his summer transfer away from Barcelona, sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta has announced, though which club the defensive player will join remains undisclosed.

The Mexico captain, who is capable of playing either in the heart of the rearguard or as an anchoring midfield player, has been linked with several sides over the course of the last month, with Serie A outfit Juventus rumoured to be interested. However, New York Red Bulls are the overwhelming favourites to pick up the 31-year-old former Monaco player.

According to Reuters, the former goalkeeper, who was speaking during the press conference to announce his arrival at Camp Nou in place of Txiki Begiristain, said that only “the final details [need] tying up” of the Marquez transfer.

Capped 94 times for his country, Marquez has won many honours with the Blaugrana, playing a role in their unique dominance of world football during 2009.
