As reported by Championat.ru, Zenit St. Petersburg athletic director Igor Korneev has confirmed that the Russian club have made a formal bid for Portuguese centre-back Bruno Alves.

"Yes, we have sent Porto a detailed proposal," said Korneev in comments reported by Maisfutebol. "Bruno Alves is one of the best central defenders in the world."

Zenit released their squad sheet to UEFA today for their third round Champions League qualification tie, with one name in the squad's central defence left blank. This slot is presumed to be reserved for either Alves' arrival or for Genoa defender Salvatore Bocchetti, who has also been linked to the club.

According to figures cited by the Portuguese media, Porto are disposed to selling the 28-year-old Alves for €20 million. Real Madrid have also been linked to the Portuguese international, as new Blancos coach Jose Mourinho hopes to reinforce his back line, along with English giants, Chelsea.
