As reported by AS, Real Madrid have expanded their search for an alternative to Brazilian right-back Maicon should the Inter star's asking price prove too far beyond Los Blancos' valuation.

As another option, Madrid have explored the possibility of signing Dutch youngster Gregory van der Wiel, currently playing for the Oranje as the starting right-back in South Africa. The 22-year-old Ajax player is under contract until June 2013 and has also garnered the interest of Barcelona.

After securing the signing of Benfica winger Angel Di Maria last week, Madrid president Florentino Perez has held a meeting with director general Jorge Valdano to strategise the rest of the signings coach Jose Mourinho has called for.

With market prices for a number of Madrid's targets being so high (Maicon at €35 million, Steven Gerrard at €40m, and Aleksandar Kolarov €25m), the club hierarchy has reportedly made the decision to hold off on another signing until the Special One returns from his summer vacation between the July 12 and 14.
