Report: Napoli Eye Reggina Midfielder Edgar Barreto

The Partenopei are following the 24-year-old Paraguayan, but will have to beat competition from Spanish and English sides.

Edgar Barreto - Reggina

New Napoli boss Roberto Donadoni and director of sport Pierpaolo Marino have already started planning for next season, and the latest name to end up on the Vesuviani’s shopping list is that of Reggina midfield man Edgar Barreto.

The 24-year-old has impressed in Serie A since joining the Calabrians from Dutch outfit NEC Nijmegen in the summer of 2007, and could be available on the cheap this summer.

In fact, the Amaranto prop the table with just five games remaining and look doomed to relegation to the second tier of Italian football. The drop would have severe economic repercussions for the southerners, and president Pasquale Foti would be forced to sell off some of their top stars.

And Barreto could be snapped up for a fee in the region of €4-5 million.

Napoli are looking to bolster their midfield options ahead of next season and have also been linked with Lazio playmaker Cristian Ledesma, Atalanta rising star Luca Cigarini and Udinese ace Gaetano D’Agostino.

However, Barreto has lots of suitors across Europe and the Azzurri will have to beat off competition from Tottenham Hotspur and several Spanish clubs to secure his services.
