Marseille’s Mathieu Valbuena Could Make A ‘Surprise’ Transfer – Agent
The diminutive midfielder appears to be surplus to requirements at the Stade Velodrome, but where he will end up is a mystery as yet.
Mathieu Valbuena has been tipped to leave Olympique de Marseille for several weeks, but the destination of his move could take some pundits aback, according to his agent.
Speaking to L’Equipe, Christophe Hutteau stated, “A big surprise from Spain, England or France cannot be excluded.”
Bundesliga outfit Schalke and Primera Division side Atletico Madrid have been confirmed as suitors for the effervescent midfielder, and Hutteau has explained that they still hold an interest in the player. However, no concrete offers have been tabled for the former Libourne Saint-Seurin man.
“That’s normal,” dismissed his representative. “So far, he has sought to convince his coach [Didier Deschamps] that he could play at Marseille, and he rejected all concrete offers he was presented with.”
The diminutive 24-year-old midfielder was initially a hit with OM after joining from Libourne in 2006. However, his career has been blighted with injuries, which have prevented him getting the sustained football he needs to build real momentum. When the Gironde-born player has received regular game-time, he has been touted for international recognition from Raymond Domenech’s Bleus.
In the 2007-08 season, he scored a spectacular winning goal for Marseille against Liverpool at Anfield in the Champions League, a moment that is certainly the highlight in the dynamic midfielder’s career to date.
