Saint-Etienne & France Striker Bafetimbi Gomis Tracked By Portsmouth – Report
With their takeover now complete, Pompey can start to move in the transfer market and appear to be targeting Saint’s powerful front player...
Rumours surrounding the future of Saint-Etienne striker Bafetimbi Gomis, which were abound at this time last year, have resurfaced in the last couple of days, with reports in France on Thursday suggesting that Olympique Lyonnais were following the player and L’Equipe intimating in its Friday edition that Portsmouth are tracking ‘La Panthere’.
The latest report suggests that Gomis still harbours great ambition to play in the Premier League, though his stock has dropped after a somewhat indifferent season with les Verts, which saw them nearly drop from France’s elite after qualifying for Europe the season previously. Indeed, Gomis was frequently whistled by his own support, who perceived him to be something of a trouble-maker in the camp due to a supposed prima donna attitude.
Gomis still top scored for Saint in the league, finding the net ten times in 36 games, but his overall showings were some way beneath his 16 goal haul in 35 games the previous season. Such form during 2007-08 saw him called into the French squad, even making the 2008 European Championship squad with les Bleus because of his impressive performances in the build-up to the campaign.
A striker with excellent raw attributes, Gomis's talent at 23-years-old could yet be effectively harnessed at a top club. Chelsea examined the prospect of signing him last summer but ultimately shied away from a move, though Portsmouth, whose summer has been disrupted by a prolonged takeover bid that is now complete, may elect to gamble on the Var-born striker.
