The gossip mill surrounding the future of Roma midfielder Alberto Aquilani is springing back into action in the Eternal City, as press reports claim that Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez is poised to make an official offer for the 25-year-old.

La Gazzetta dello Sport suggests that a Reds delegation is expected in Rome today to table a bid in the region of  €15-18 million to lure the Italian international to Anfield should Spanish star Xabi Alonso be allowed to join Real Madrid.

The player would be offered a five-year deal worth €3m per season.

Aquilani is tied to the Giallorossi until June 2013 after signing an extension last May and has repeatedly stressed his desire to remain at his hometown club.

But the Lupi are in dire economic straits and will be forced to sell at least one of their top stars this summer after takeover negotiations with a Swiss consortium broke down.

Aquilani is currently sidelined after undergoing ankle surgery in May and will travel to the Netherlands for a consultation next week.
