From his 2004 switch from Boca Juniors to Corinthians onwards, controversy has followed the player closely, not least due to the huge price tags involved in all of his sales.
Furthermore, the cash surrounding Tevez is often linked in with Media Sports Investments, a company headed by Iranian businessman Kia Joorabchian, with whom much of the Argentine forward's rights are tied up.
With that in mind, we can examine just how much this enigmatic striker seems to be worth:
| From | To | Date | Price (euros) |
| Boca Juniors | Corinthians | Dec 2004 | 16,260,000 |
| Corinthians | West Ham United | Aug 2006 | 17,664,000 |
| West Ham United | (MSI) | Jul 2007 | 2,980,000 |
| (MSI) | Manchester United | Aug 2007 | 14,800,000 |
| (Manchester United)/MSI | Manchester City | Jul 2009 | 37,638,000 |
| TOTAL: | €89,342,000 |
Notes on the figures:
- Publicly accessible transfer fees, as reported in the mainstream media, were cited, and converted into euros using the exchange rate applicable on the day that the transfer in question took place.
- In the case of the move from West Ham United to MSI, MSI paid 2m GBP to extricate Tevez from his Boleyn Ground contract, at which point he was free to sign on an extended 'loan' for Manchester United. This is counted as a transfer fee as it saw the player's registration altered.
- For the latest switch to Manchester City, no fee whatsoever is payable to Manchester United. The money goes to MSI as the player was a free agent.
- The figures do not include the 5.5m GBP fine paid by West Ham United for 'irregularities' regarding the signing of Tevez and Javier Mascherano.
- Nor do the figures include the 20m GBP payable in continued installments by the Hammers to Sheffield United over irregularities that the latter club claim helped to cause their relegation in 2007.
- The proportion of money given to Boca Juniors and Corinthians by MSI upon the player's departure from these two clubs remains confidential, but the transfer fees in their entirety were reported by mainstream press outlets and are thus included.
