According to a report in the British tabloid The Sun, Aston Villa are weighing-up whether to swoop for Portsmouth's Sol Campbell during the close-season.
It is thought that Villans manager Martin O'Neill has made bringing in a new centre-back one of his priorities this summer following the retirement of Martin Laursen due to persistent knee problems.
Campbell will be available to snap up on a free transfer in July as his contract at Fratton Park is coming to an end.
Pompey, it is said, are keen to keep hold of the 34-year-old 6ft 2in defender and have offered him a new contract worth around £40,000-a-week.
However, the former England international would be earning less than he has been if he were to put-pen-to-paper on such a deal with the south coast club. Meanwhile, moving to Villa would allow him the opportunity to play Europa League football next season.
The former Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal star has also been linked with a host of European outfits, including Ligue 1 side Saint-Etienne and Greek team Atromitos.
