According to reports in various British tabloids, Premier League giants Liverpool are weighing-up an offer from Real Madrid for Xabi Alonso.

It was reported on Sunday that an agreement had been reached that would see the Spain international move to the Santiago Bernabeu as early as next week in exchange for €25 million.

However, Reds manager Rafael Benitez later denied that they had accepted the offer, which might have also seen Gabriel Heinze move to Anfield, insisting they do not intend to sell the midfielder.

The initial report also claimed that Liverpool had asked los Merengues to include Alvaro Negredo as part of the deal.

The 23-year-old striker left los Blancos to join Almeria in 2007, where he has excelled, scoring 32 goals in 64 games.

Although said to be extremely reluctant to do so initially, it is thought Real Madrid are now prepared to exercise a buy-back option on the Spain Under-21 international. They would then use him to tempt Liverpool to sell Alonso.

Benitez has yet to comment on the renewed speculation.
