The 24-time capped Nigeria international, who has scored 13 goals for the Super Eagles, was apparently in negotiations to join the Viola for around €8.5 million (£7.5m) this summer.
However, the transfer has been called into question after the striker opted to book himself in for surgery to correct a groin problem which had hampered him throughout the 2008/09 campaign.
As a result, it is likely that the striker will spend at least six weeks recovering, which means that the Gigliati may wait until later this summer to see if he has fully recovered before completing any deal.
Should a move to Italy fail to materialise, it is claimed that Arsenal could make a move for Martins as manager Arsene Wenger is said to be an admirer.
