According to a report in the British tabloid The Sun, Newcastle United have placed a £15 million price-tag on Sebastien Bassong in the hope of staving off interest from Premier League clubs.

It has been claimed that Arsenal, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing the 22-year-old, but the Magpies have insisted that, despite relegation, their top stars will not be leaving cheaply.

The 6ft 2in centre-back has suggested that he might look to depart St. James' Park as he is keen to continue plying his trade in England's top-flight.

Indeed, the France Under-21 international has been tipped to break into les Bleus' senior set-up in the not too distant future. Playing in the Championship could harm his chances of doing so.

However, the Toon are apparently keen to hold onto the former Metz star and it is claimed they will offer him a new contract worth more than his current £5,000-a-week deal.
