thumbnail Hello,

The Paraguayan side never looked like losing to Cruz Azul in Asuncion while Velez held out for a draw against Atletico Nacional that saw the Colombians drop out of the tournament

Libertad
2-0
Cruz Azul

Libertad made the most of their home advantage to overcome Cruz Azul 2-0 at the Dr. Nicolas Leoz stadium and book a spot in the last eight.

The hosts stormed ahead inside just 10 minutes as Victor Ayala flighted his free kick from deep in towards the near post. Jose Ariel Nunez had evaded his marker and managed to squeeze a header past Jose Corona. After Claudio Bonet had fired a volley narrowly over from Pablo Velazquez's knock down, Ayala saw a powerful effort of his own tipped over the bar from an acute angle.

The second half began similarly to the first and Los Repolleros notched their second of the night just six minutes after the restart. Ayala's delivery from the dead ball was once again exquisite and this time it was Victor Caceres who added the finishing touch with the game's second header. Cruz Azul threatened occassionally but their finishing left a lot to be desired and it was only the saves of Corona that kept the score respectable. The Mexican keeper denied both Velazquez and Nunez from adding to the scoreline in the second half.

The victory means that Libertad will find out on Thrusday who they shall play in the quarter final. It will be either Deportivo Quito or Universidad de Chile, a tie in which the Ecuadorians currently lead 4-1.

Velez
1-1
Atletico Nacional

Velez made the most of their home advantage as they contained Atletico Nacional for much of the game, only having to withstand pressure in the final 20 minutes. Augusto Fernandez added to Ivan Bella's first leg strike early in the second half but El Fortin suffered a nervy end after Luis Mosquera equalised for the visitors. Read the full match report here
