Copa Libertadores: Maxi Lopez Scores Twice As Gremio Beat San Martin
The former Barcelona man bagged a double as the Tricolor claimed a comfortable victory in Lima...
Gremio of Porto Alegre have one foot in the quarter-finals of the Copa Libertadores, after beating Universidad San Martin de Porres 3-1 in the first leg of the round of 16 match-up in Peru.
The Brazilians won the match with two goals from Maximiliano Lopez and another from Souza, while Martin Arzuaga found the back of the net for San Martin.
Gremio were the better side in the opening stages, and they went ahead in the 9th minute when Souza beat Leao Butron with an unstoppable left-foot thunderbolt.
But the Peruvians took the game to Gremio after going behind, and in the 34th minute Colombian striker Martin Arzuaga drew them level with a clinical finish.
Both teams had their chances to score again late in the first half, but they went into the break level after an entertaining first 45 minutes.
Immediately after the restart Maxi Lopez connected to a precise Souza cross with a well-placed header, to put the visiting Brazilians 2-1 up.
The two-time Copa Libertadores champions dominated their opponents after the goal, and it seemed that at any moment they would increase their lead.
This was exactly the case, as in the 62nd minute Lopez added their third with another header, this time from a Jonas cross.
Towards the end of the game San Martin tried their best to pull one back, but although they peppered the Gremio goal they couldn't find a way past Victor, who made a number of fine stops.
The match was staged at the Alejandro Villanueva stadium, the home ground of Alianza Lima.
