The group stage of the 2009 Copa Libertadores came to a conclusion on Thursday night, and this meant that the knockout phase match-ups were revealed.

Gremio, the best ranked team of the competition, will face a Universidad de San Martin side who were thrashed 3-0 by an already eliminated River Plate on Thursday. The first leg of the tie will be staged in Peru.

Brazilian teams Sport Recife and Palmeiras, who met in the group stage, will clash once again in what is likely to be a thrilling series. Both teams demonstrated their quality in the group stage.

Other interesting match-ups see three-time Copa Libertadores winners Sao Paulo face Chivas de Guadalajara. While Cruzeiro lock horns with Universidad de Chile. The Brazilians are expected to advance from these ties.

Boca Juniors, the most successful team competing in the tournament with six titles, are up against a difficult Defensor Sporting, with the first-leg clash to be staged at the Centenario stadium in Montevideo.

While Argentina's other representative, Estudiantes de La Plata, will battle with Libertad of Paraguay, who lost 2-0 to San Luis earlier in the week.

Nacional clash with San Luis of Mexico. The undefeated Uruguayans defeated Nacional of Paraguay 3-1 in their final group game on Thursday night.

By far the least attractive match-up of the round is the one between South American minnows Caracas and Deportivo Cuenca.
