Copa Libertadores: Palermo Scores 200th Goal As Boca Advance
Boca Juniors advanced to the knockout phase of the tournament after thrashing Deportivo Tachira in Buenos Aires...
Martin Palermo starred in Boca Juniors' emphatic 3-0 victory over Deportivo Tachira at the Bombonera stadium on Thursday night.
Palermo scored twice, with his second goal being the 200th of his Boca career. Rodrigo Palacio scored Boca's other goal.
Deportivo Tachira knew that they had to pick up a positive result, as well as rely on the outcome of the match between Deportivo Cuenca and Guarani in Paraguay.
Because of this they pushed to the attack straight from the kick-off, looking for an early goal that would keep their chances of progressing alive.
But in the 13th minute Jose Granados brought Palermo down in the area, and the veteran striker picked himself up to fire Boca into the lead from the penalty spot.
After going behind, Carlos Maldonado's team had no choice but to attack the Boca goal, but they did this without any luck.
Yonathan Del Valle came closest to scoring for the Venezuelans in the 37th minute, but after twice getting the better of Juan Forlin, Roberto Abbondanzieri saved his effort.
After the break both teams created opportunities to score, but it was Los Xeneizes who added to their slender lead.
In the 61st minute, Palermo connected to a Palacio cross with a spectacular scissor kick. It was his 200th goal with the Boca shirt.
Ten minutes from full-time, Palacio scored Boca's third goal of the night when he tapped in a cross from close-range.
Boca claimed a comfortable victory that saw them win their group in style, with 15 points from a possible 18 in the six encounters that they played in the group stage of the Copa Libertadores.
In Thursday's other Group 2 clash, Guarani and Deportivo Cuenca drew 1-1 in Paraguay. Rodrigo Texeira put the visitors ahead in the 2nd minute, but Osvaldo Diaz drew Guarani level in the 56th minute.
