San Luis were on the verge of elimination from the group stage of the Copa Libertadores, but Jose Rodolfo Reyes appeared with a crucial injury-time header against Libertad that put the Mexicans through at the expense of Universitario de Deportes.

Universitario lost 2-0 away to San Lorenzo in Buenos Aires, but had San Luis not scored their second goal in the final instances of the match, the Peruvians would have advanced instead.

But outsiders San Luis came back from the dead to pick up a miraculous victory that will be greatly celebrated in Mexico.

The Gladiators knew that they needed to claim a victory to stand a chance, even if they had to rely on the outcome of the game between San Lorenzo and Universitario.

San Luis went ahead in the 58th minute with a spectacular free kick from Colombian midfielder Jairo Patino, but they needed to score once more in order to reach the knockout phase of the competition.

It seemed too much to ask, as Libertad were completely dominant towards the end of the game.

In Buenos Aires, Universitario found the back of the net in the final minutes of their game with San Lorenzo, but the seemingly legitimate effort was disallowed by match referee Enrique Oses of Chile.

When the Peruvian players were protesting the decision of the referee, San Luis managed to score a much-needed second goal through Reyes, which ended up sending them through while at the same time eliminating a stunned Universitario.

Ronaille Calheira (o.g) and Alejandro Gomez scored for the already eliminated San Lorenzo.
