Figueroa Gives Boca Late Win Over Tachira
A late strike from Luciano Figueroa was the difference as Boca Juniors edged Deportivo Tachira 1-0 in a tight Copa Libertadores encounter in San Cristobal on Wednesday...
Boca Juniors may have been without several of their key players, but they still managed a valuable 1-0 victory over Deportivo Tachira in front of more than 40,000 fans in Venezuela.
The only goal of the match was scored by Boca striker Luciano Figueroa in the 87th minute.
Although the match commenced with a frantic pace, as the half progressed both teams lacked the necessary creativity to put together any meaningful attacks.
Juan Roman Riquelme was Boca's most influential player in the midfield, but although he steered his team forward he lacked precision with his passing and free-kicks.
Towards the end of the half Tachira looked more lively, and they came close to scoring with a Alejandro Delorte header that flew over the crossbar in the 28th minute.
Tachira, who had won five consecutive matches prior to the game, tried to out muscle Boca, but this didn't help their cause.
After the break, Boca dominated the midfield, but as was the case in the first half they couldn't manufacture any decent goal-scoring opportunities.
They evidently lacked the speed of Rodrigo Palacio, in particular, as Ricardo Noir and Lucas Viatri had quiet games.
Viatri's only contribution to the match was a terrific header that struck the woodwork in the 66th minute.
In the 69th minute Carlos Ischia decided to replace Viatri with Luciano Figueroa, and the move paid dividends.
It seemed that the match would end in a dull goalless draw, but Figueroa snatched Boca the three points with a fine header three minutes from full-time.
Boca Juniors picked up their second consecutive victory in the Copa Libertadores, and they lead Group 2 with six points. They are followed by Deportivo Cuenca and Deportivo Tachira, with three points, and by Guarani, with no points.
