Deportivo Independiente Medellin completely dominated their opponents, and cruised to a comfortable victory with a superb hat-trick from Jackson Martinez (15', 18', 46') and another goal from Ivan Hurtado (34').

The Colombians pushed forward to the attack straight from the kick-off, and after much pressure, they finally went ahead in the 15th minute when Jackson Martinez beat Pablo Cavallero with a powerful header that went in off the left post.

Three minutes later Martinez was at it again, this time firing the ball home after the Peñarol defense couldn't clear the ball from the area.

By this stage it was complete domination from Medellin, and they extended their lead in the 34th minute when Ivan Hurtado scored with a free-kick that fooled the Peñarol goalkeeper.

Less than one minute into the break Martinez completed his hat-trick with another good finish, to the dismay of Peñarol boss Julio Ribas.

Towards the end of the match Peñarol finally began to play some decent football, but it was much too late and they had to settle for a heavy 4-0 defeat that severely dents their chances of reaching the group stage of the competition.
