The Italian defender will take over Javier Zanetti's armband in the new season, while Nemanja Vidic will be given time to adapt to an initial three-man defensive system
The legendary Argentine stated at the end of the 2013-14 campaign that he saw Ranocchia as a good successor and Mazzarri has now revealed that the centre-back will indeed be the one wearing the armband in the new season.
"The captain of a team is someone who leads by example. Ranocchia is a lad who's got what it takes for the job," Mazzarri said at a press conference.
"A captain must be professional, someone the others can look to."
Inter have already secured the services of Nemanja Vidic and Dodo ahead of next season and Mazzarri has stressed that he will give the former Manchester United defender plenty of time to adapt to his new surroundings, while he also expects the Brazilian to play a pivotal role in all competitions.
"Initially we'll start off with a three-man defence so that Nemanja can get used to it, as he's never played in such a system before," said Mazzarri.
"Then once I have the full squad to work with we'll focus on four at the back.
"Dodo is going to be very useful to us: he's one of the four full-backs I'll use in Serie A, Europa League and Coppa Italia. Hopefully we can stay in them all for as long as possible."
