thumbnail Hello,

The 36-year-old has not represented his country since 2009 but he feels that he has be in the reckoning for a recall given he has netted 16 times in Serie A this season

Luca Toni can see no reason why Cesare Prandelli would not be considering including him in his Italy squad for this summer's World Cup.

The Verona striker has not represented the Azzurri since 2009 and will turn 37 in May. However, after netting his 16th goal of the Serie A season in Saturday night's derby win over Chievo to move third in the race for the Capocannoniere title, Toni feels that he has to be in the reckoning for an international recall.

"The World Cup? Why not?" the former Bayern Munich forward mused during his post-game interview with Sky Sport Italia.

"After all, if strikers who scored fewer goals than me this season are being considered, then it makes sense I should be too."

Toni's winner against Chievo means he has now netted more goals than any other Verona player in a single Serie A season.

Even though the 2006 World Cup winner has broken goalscoring records throughout his nomadic career, he says that his latest feat is of special significance to him, given the unexpected nature of his and Verona's form this term.

"I'm proud of this record, much more than the others I had claimed before: at Palermo, Fiorentina and Bayern Munich," he confessed.

"At the start of the season I could not have imagined having a season like this.

"Will it continue? For as long as I have this adrenalin inside me, I will keep going forward."
