The Belgian scored both goals in the Partenopei’s 2-0 win over Sampdoria and insists his side will compete for the league titleDries Mertens has claimed that Napoli will not give up on the league title after narrowing the gap to two points off second-placed Roma.
Mertens played a starring role in Monday’s 2-0 win against Sampdoria, scoring two second-half goals at the Stadio San Paolo.
The victory has given Mertens cause for optimism that the Partenopei - 10 points off leaders Juventus - can still mount a title challenge.
“The league? We still have many games to play, we'll see. We do not give up,” said Mertens, speaking to La Gazzetta Dello Sport.
"Objective second place? For us, today's victory was important to shorten the gap to Roma."
The 26 year-old has now made 15 Serie A appearances and scored four goals for Rafael Benitez's men since arriving from PSV in the summer.
“Was I expecting to play so fast? At PSV I gained great experience, now I'm happy here,” said the Belgium international on the start to his Napoli career.
“To whom I dedicate the win? I'm happy, Naples is a beautiful city in which it is pleasant to live. The dedication is to the fans and the city.”
Napoli’s next league game is against Verona on January 12.
